Metasequoia glyptostroboides

September

It took a journey to foreign parts to learn how much more beautiful this tree can be than the rather dull narrow conical specimens now common in this country: even along the Cromwell Road Extension, of all places.

In Southern Germany it reaches out long feathery branches and in late summer weighs them down with six-inch-long pale green fruiting catkins. This broad graceful tree is so distinct I wonder if it is a different introduction from our rocket-shaped model.
