Cornus kousa

May (b)

Will the real Cornus kousa please stand up? Is one of you C. kousa chinensis? Is Cornus kousa really  a tree? But let that pass; the older of these dogwoods is nearly 20 feet high, slender, inherently graceful and (flowering just after the magnolias) a perfect link between spring and summer..

The first of these two plants, with broad flattened bracts, came to me as C. kousa from Notcutts about 20 years ago. The second, with narrow perky little bracts, altogether less rich but more lively looking, was planted here 50 years ago by Lady Carlyle. I'd love to know which is the authentic one. They flower at precisely the same time - this year three weeks earlier than usual.
