Prunus serrulata 'Autumn Glory' - aka P. verecunda 'Autumn Glory'

April

It won 't be more than a week in its full beauty, which is why flowering cherries in general are trees of weeks rather than months. I could have chosen any of half a dozen this week, because they are all flowering together. Prunus 'Shirotae' is my runner-up.

I choose 'Autumn Glory', which is a variety of the Korean Hill Cherry (or so I'm told) because its sheer density of small flowers is overwhelming, because it makes a good big tree - ours is 35 feet high after 35 years - and because its autumn season of orange, yellow and red leaves is even better (and usually longer lasting).

The problem is that no nursery lists it any longer. The Plantfinder says it was last listed in 2008. How can such an outstanding tree drop out of commerce? Because, I suppose, flowering cherries are less fashionable than they once were. You won't have a problem finding the lamentable P. 'Kanzan', though.
