TREE OF THE MONTH

Taxodium distichum

October

The swamp cypress doesn't need a swamp. This tree has been growing in sharp-draining gravel in an almost arid area for fifty years. It is half the size of another planted in the same year beside a pond, which has shot up to 80 feet and developed a dozen scaly brown 'knees' around its base, both in and out of the water.

The dry-land cypress is barely 40 feet high and less than half the girth. On the other hand it has developed an elegantly sparse branching pattern with a graceful twist. In November, in its rich red-brown, it reminds me of a pirouetting pagoda.
