Back to latest Flower of the Week

Argyranthemum frutescens

I'm not too certain about the proper name of the Paris daisy or marguerite these days - and I certainly never expected it to be in my flower of the third week of November. But as the borders dim, still unfrosted but battered and tinged with brown, the front rank bedding, a row of Paris daisies behind the box hedges sparkles brighter and lighter in comparison, like an edging of silver braid on a tweed coat.

We've had this plant in the garden and greenhouse (where its cuttings live in winter) for over 30 years. Its particularly fine -cut pale grey leaves caught the eye of John Hedgecoe when he was photographing the Aga Khan's then-new development of the Costa Smeralda in Sardinia. A cutting found its way to Saling - and just look at it now.

PS on December 30th. It still looks much the same, although with no more flowers.
