Monarda didyma 'Cambridge Scarlet'

26 July 2010

Bergamot, the 'common' name of Monarda (another is horsemint) is a confusing term. Bergamot orange is a citrus fruit. 'Bergamotte' is the name of a pear. Presumably they all have the same scent, familiar in Earl Grey tea, which has been described as a cross between mint and basil.

Border bergamot normally demands dampish conditions. Why then is it flourishing as never before in this summer's dry heat? It is very happy here with delphiniums and Veronicastrum and Macleaya, making, I think, a good flag-like colour combination.
