Holodiscus discolor
The rainy Pacific Northwest is the home of this curious bush, among tall madrones and Douglas firs. Its name has altered several times; Spirea quercifolia was its label when I first encountered it. It is graceful in its forests, and good in many gardens, but I have never seen it flower so well as on this south wall at Holkham Hall in Norfolk, putting most spireas to shame.
It looks lovely with purplish hydrangeas here at Saling.
