Rose Lafollette
31 March 2011
The earliest rose of the Côte d'Azur has been seen in this spot before, but never as early as March. It is flowering in the roof of the conservatory, reaching for the sky, whereas our other long term resident-in-a-pot, Maréchal Niel, droops languidly along the wall below. Lord Brougham's Cannes gardener, the breeder of Lafollette, matched it with olive trees. The pale pink flowers, high in a silver olive and underplanted with white-flowering broom, are the most memorable early spring picture of the privileged coast.
