Winter Jasmine

21 March 2011

Both my Flower of the Week and Tree of this Month come from China. Directly from The Forbidden City, in fact. There was very little in flower in the cold of Beijing in early March; the bursts of yellow in front gardens, along fences and in the emperor's inner sanctum of his gigantic palace are greeted with rapture as the first sign of spring to come.

In this country, of course, winter jasmine is considered no big deal. Everyone has it, and it flowers right through most English winters. I wonder, though, whether this Beijing flower is identical to ours. It seemed to me a touch smaller, and perhaps a little sunnier in colour.
