Apples

September

September is between-the-season for most trees. Only Eucryphia is still in flower. Only Parrotia has started to turn to autumn colours. The eye-catchers are the fruit trees, this year more heavily-laden than ever, and among the fruit trees apples. The light reflected from the scarlet fruit in their tops is an unescapable reference to the garden of Eden.

Did the Creator start with crab apples and leave it to Adam's descendants to develop big juicy varieties? (The answer is probably no: there are apple forests in Central Asia where our garden apples have their already-juicy ancestors). Our tall John Downie, glittering with red-and-yellow fruit, looks a good candidate for Eden, but this Charles Ross even more so.
