Back to latest Flower of the Week
Liriope muscari
1 November 2010
With flowers getting thin on the ground the tough little Japanese 'lily-turf' comes into its own. For the rest of the year it is a dull, respectable ground cover for shady places - though it is not fussy. In October its quiet violet flowers arising among fresh green leaves are eye catching and comforting: like cyclamen they say the year is not completely over yet. Cyclamen on the other hand make them look dowdy; they are best kept apart. To my mind they are at their best used semi-formally (as edging, for example) rather than dotted about.
