Cosmos bipinnatus

12 October 2009

A workhorse it may be, and a mere single daisy, but this Mexican annual looms bigger and bigger as the season progresses until by October it becomes a major theme in many gardens. As the days shorten white flowers become more important. Cosmos that started as skimpy little fillers in summer have reached three or four feet, spread their pale fanning leaves and fill the border with their lively, generous, tilting and swaying flowers.

To me the white variety is the most valuable. It complements the pinks, purples and blues of the season and gives brilliance to a potentially dowdy colour scheme. It repays deadheading until frost destroys it.
