Back to latest Flower of the Week

Iris unguicularis 'Mary Barnard'

6 December 2010

Poor Mary has been miserable in the past week of bitter weather, having enjoyed three weeks of bloom from mid-November until it froze.

I moved her from a parched spot under the house wall last spring, having read that rubble and dust were the sort of conditions this sweet sensitive creature prefers. She never did herself justice there, but now, just inside the kitchen garden gate, in an open position facing west where rain reaches her, she is intermittently resplendent, even if her colour seems to upset my camera. In reality she is a much brighter pale violet than this. I'd love to know why blues in general are so unpredictable in photographs, either on film or digitally. I'll try again when she reappears - soon, I sincerely hope.
