Hemerocallis lilioasphodelus

We used to call this Hemerocallis flava, and welcome it as the first daylily to flower, towards the end of May and for a long time thereafter - and curiously, for a daylily, opening its flowers at night.

It is vigorous, forming broad rhizomatous mats of narrow light-green leaves. The sweet-scented flowers, clear lemon yellow, rise gracefully, half a dozen on each stem, well clear of the leaves. I have had it for years in a pleasing combination with a bright blue speedwell, Veronica ''Shirley Blue'. They are one of the markers of late spring and early summer.
