Back to latest Flower of the Week
Cymbidium
21 January 2010
Mid-winter has produced no image, yet, of a Flower of the Week, and only, I fear, a very poor one of the undoubted Flower of the Month, an ancient Cymbidium that may be singing its swan song, but has been astonishing visitors (and me) since well before Christmas. It has had well over 400 flowers on great swags on the overburdened stems you see in the photograph – taken in situ in the dark stairwell where it seems to thrive with no light.
Its pot is so tight with roots that I tried in vain to put sticks in to support the flowers. You see it in the company of a sculpture by my father-in-law and a glass candle-shade I was constrained to use as a prop to prevent two flowering stems from collapsing completely.
Its name I fear is lost in the mists of time, but it is a rich yellow with red markings on the lips. I shall divide it (with difficulty) and repot it for distribution in the summer, but it may be many years before we see another such performance.
