Nicotiana mutabilis
7 October 2010
This Brazilian variant on the tobacco plant was only introduced to this country in 2002, but not surprisingly has caught on rapidly as an easy addition to our late summer flowers. As its specific name implies the flowers open white and than change to pink and red.
This is its second year at Saling, last year’s seeds (given by a friend) having germinated easily. It needs plenty of moisture to get it growing, so this summer’s drought held it back until August. Now it is over five feet high and smelling sweetly.
Worth looking for in seed catalogues for next year.
