Back to latest Flower of the Week

Two flowers, rather, but playing together so perfectly that neither seems complete to me without the other.

They are the incomparable old rose Gloire de Dijon and the improbable climbing potato tree, Solanum crispum 'Glasnevin'.The solanum scrambles up the rose and an olive tree on the west wall of the house, reaching 15 feet and launching long flowering branches into space. Gloire de Dijon starts into flower first, sometimes as early as April. By mid May the purple potato flowers have joined it, to continue into the summer. No rose is more peachy, flesh-like and sensual, with a sweet tea scent, or flowers over a longer season.

Grey olive leaves complement the two contrasting colours.
